Emerging the need for new containers for waste disposal
Currently, radioactive waste is disposed of according to each classification, and low-level radioactive
waste is stored in a drum container at a waste storage location in Gyeongju. According to the "2021
Nuclear Yearbook", a total of 2,876 drums of solid waste packaged in drums (based on 200 liters of
drums) were generated at the end of 2020, and the cumulative solid waste currently temporarily stored in
the power plant has increased to 90,040 drums.
Due to this situation, the Korea Atomic Energy Agency hopes to develop radioactive waste containers for
nuclear dismantling and disposal at once to manage the original cycle.
Development of Best Energy Radiation Shielding Film Sheet
Best Energy is working on developing a prototype by analyzing the function of raw materials with
radiation shielding functions and extruding a compound material in the center layer of the 3-layer
coextruded CPP film into the CPP film.
Based on the technology that has made various polymer films such as CPP films and lead tab films, we are
working hard to develop radiation shielding film sheets and make them soft bags.
Development Scope of Radioactive Waste Shielding Softback Technology
For this reason, it is necessary to develop a soft bag, a synthetic fiber container, as a new container.
Compared to drum containers, the container has the advantage of being free to design, so in nuclear
waste disposal, it is possible to manufacture customized containers in small sizes, such as large-scale
and medical radioactive waste disposal.
This feature allows you to store a larger amount of waste in the same space, freeing up space, and
because it is based on polymer materials, you can also enjoy a price reduction compared to drum
containers.
